Help us understand how parental beliefs and behaviors influence children’s cognitive skills!
We are seeking children ages 4- to 6-years (and their parents) to participate in an hour long study at our laboratory.
During this visit, your child will be asked to complete four short tasks with an experimenter that include card sorting, inhibitory tasks, and behavioral challenges. After these tasks are complete, the parent and child will spend 10 minutes in a room with some toys and puzzles to engage with as one normally would at home. Additionally, parents will be given a survey asking some demographic and family-related questions, in addition to questions about child development, that will take about fifteen minutes to complete.
Total time to complete: around 1 hour
Compensation: $15 Amazon e-gift card. Children also get to take home a small toy or book.
Eligibility: Since we are looking at the typical course of development, we cannot include children who:
have disabilities affecting vision, hearing, or physical growth
have any known developmental disorders (such as ADHD or autism)
do not speak English at least 50% of the time (otherwise your child might have difficulty comprehending tasks)
**Parents who are completing any portion of this study must speak English at least 50% of the time to understand and complete the questionnaires.
The information we collect will be confidential and will not be shared. Our research report will not identify or describe individuals. If you are interested in receiving this report, you will be prompted to provide your email address at the end of the study. This study is approved by George Mason University’s Institutional Review Board (Approval #00000425).
